Ghislaine Maxwell’s brother says US prosecutors are trying to “break” the British socialite as she prepares to face the “most over-hyped trial of the century” because authorities are desperate to blame someone for Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.
Maxwell’s long-anticipated sex-trafficking trial is set to kick off on Monday in the US District Court in Manhattan.
Prosecutors allege Maxwell, 59, groomed girls as young as 14 to have sex with Epstein from 1994 through 2004, and lied about her knowledge of his crimes when she testified in an earlier case.
Ian Maxwell, told the Associated Press on Friday that his sister was being targeted because authorities want to hold someone accountable for Epstein’s crime
“This is not quite a put-up job, but nonetheless has been cobbled together so that Ghislaine is made to face the charges that Epstein never faced,” Ian Maxwell said.
“This is designed to break her. I can’t see any other way to read it,” he added. “And she will not be broken because she believes completely in her innocence and she is going to give the best account she can.”
Maxwell, who lived with Epstein for years and previously dated him, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
She has been in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since she was arrested 17 months ago, and she has been denied bail several times.
“The authorities are feeling under pressure … because they lost [Epstein] and they’re feeling under the public’s pressure, and that combination of pressure is keeping Ghislaine inside. But it still doesn’t make it right,” Ian Maxwell said.
Her family continue to push for bail, arguing her detention amounts to torture and is “inhumane.”
Ian Maxwell said his sister is in “effective isolation” in a cell with no natural light.
Maxwell is also unable to sleep because she is watched around the clock by four guards and 10 cameras due to unwarranted concerns that she is a suicide risk, he added.
“The denial of bail is wholly inappropriate,” Maxwell’s brother said.
“Some very famous, infamous people were granted bail as most recently the killer of George Floyd, a murderer. John Gotti, another murderer, a mobster. Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Bernie Madoff. These are all men, of course, who got bail.
“Ghislaine is a woman who somehow doesn’t get bail.”
Maxwell is charged with six counts for allegedly procuring underage girls for Epstein to abuse from 1994 through 2004.
The trial is expected to kick off with opening statements on Monday after more than a year of preparation.
