The disappearance of Long Island native Gabby Petito is not related to the double slaying of a newlywed couple at a Utah campground, cops said Friday.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office poured cold water on the possibility that the killings outside Moab could be tied to the missing persons case in a one sentence statement.
“It has been determined that the Gabby Petito missing person’s case is not related to the double homicide case involving Crystal Turner and Kylen Schulte,” Sheriff Steven White wrote.
Police had been looking into a possible connection for several days, and on Thursday, a lawyer for Petito’s Brian Laundrie boyfriend, who remains mum about her possible whereabouts, issued a bizarre statement about the need to investigate a possible link.
Police were called to a domestic dispute between Petito, 22 and Laundrie, 23, at the workplace of one of the murder victims, Kylen Schulte, 24, on Aug. 12. No charges were filed.
A day later, Schulte and wife Crystal Turner, 38 were seen at a Moab bar talking to friends about a creepy guy who was staying at their campsite, officials said. It was the last time they were seen alive.
The couple’s partially undressed bodies were found on Aug. 18 with gunshot wounds in their backs, sides and chests.
Petito was last seen in Wyoming on Aug. 30 as she traveled the country with Laundrie in her white van.
Laundrie returned to his parent’s Florida home in the van, without his girlfriend.
He has refused to speak to police or Petito’s desperate family about the case.
Officers were seen visiting the Laundrie home Friday evening, but cops said they weren’t there to interrogate to the tight-lipped boyfriend, who has not been named a suspect.
“North Port Police are currently speaking with the Laundrie Family at their request. At this time, we are not speaking with Brian. More details when available,” the North Port Police department Tweeted.
