Law enforcement announced new details in the strange shooting of prominent powerful South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who was allegedly shot in the head on a rural road while on his way to Charleston on Saturday.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division [SLED] revealed on Sunday that it had received a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. when Murdaugh, a member of a long-standing South Carolina legal dynasty whose wife and younger son were murdered in June,  said he had been shot on Old Salkehatchie Road near Varnville, South Carolina, according to WLTX.

SLED said in a release the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office secured the scene while EMS air-transported Murdaugh to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia for treatment of a “superficial” gunshot wound to the head.

WTLX reported that the Savannah hospital is typically a trauma-treatment center for severe injuries.

Murdaugh had car trouble during his trip and stopped to change a tire, his lawyer, Jim Griffin, told local media. Griffin said shots were fired from a truck that had passed Murdaugh on the road and circled back as he was working on his car.

Several Hampton County sources familiar with the investigation told The Post the route Murdaugh was reportedly taking to Charleston was a longer one than most drivers going to Charleston would use.

Murdaugh called his brother, Randy, to report the shooting around 2:15 p.m., Griffin told the Post and Courier.

SLED said it worked throughout the night obtaining evidence and the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Murdaugh and his family were the subject of sensational national headlines when his wife, Maggie, 52, was shot to death near the dog kennels on the grounds of the family’s hunting lodge on June 7. Also gunned down was her and Alex’s troubled 22-year-old son, Paul.

Murdaugh found the bodies at the lodge, called “Moselle,” around 10 p.m. The victims were shot multiple times, the coroner said, reportedly with a semi-automatic assault rifle and a shotgun. He ruled the deaths a double homicide.

Murdaugh was named a “person of interest” by law enforcement early in the investigation of his wife and son’s deaths, but now say he is not. The family has claimed he has a rock-solid alibi: He was visiting his dying father in the hospital at the time of the killings.
