Seven people at a university in western Germany were poisoned by spiked beverages that turned some of their hands and feet blue — and prosecutors are now investigating the incident as attempted murder.
The employees and students began experiencing medical issues, including discoloration on their hands and feet, after they all had food or a drink in a small kitchen at the Technical University in Darmstadt on Monday, the BBC reported.
Six of them were taken to the hospital, including one who was in critical condition.
In one of the buildings on the campus, police uncovered foul-smelling milk cartons and water containers that appeared to have been contaminated with a harmful substance.
Police have declined to identify the substance, citing the ongoing investigation.
Prosecutor Robert Hartmann said Tuesday that officials have not tracked down a culprit but the poisoning appears to have been deliberate. No possible motive has been released.
Investigators have warned students who consumed food or beverages in the building to seek medical treatment if they “feel unwell or their extremities show a bluish discoloration.”
