Dozens of people were missing in North Carolina after the county that was inundated with flooding rains from Tropical Depression Fred on Tuesday.

The post-tropical cyclone drenched the western mountainous region of the state, washing out bridges, swamping homes and igniting landslides.

Haywood County was particularly hard-hit, and about 35 people there were still unaccounted for by late Wednesday, county officials said.

Ground, air, and water operations were being used in search and rescue efforts.

About 100 people have already been rescued during the flooding in the state. On Wednesday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency.

In Buncombe County, which borders Haywood County, there have been at least 70 water rescue efforts, officials said.

Fred has since trekked north, threatening to cause more chaos in Upstate New York, with heavy rains and potential mudslides.
