As many as 150 people were shot dead in at least 450 acts of gun violence across the country over the Fourth of July weekend — as major American cities, including the Big Apple, struggle to stem the surge in shootings, new data shows.
New Yorkers saw 21 shootings that injured 26 people between Friday and Sunday, a slight dip from the same dates last year when 30 people were shot in 25 acts of gunplay.
In Chicago, 92 people were shot over the holiday weekend, 16 of whom died, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The victims included a Chicago police commander and a sergeant who were wounded while dispersing a crowd on the city’s West Side early Monday.
The disturbing statistics were compiled over the last 72 hours by the Gun Violence Archive, a continuously updated database which showed 448 shootings nationwide as of Monday afternoon.
In Fort Worth, police reported a mass shooting of eight people early Sunday when a man pulled a gun on a group of people after an argument at a car wash, cops said.
Another mass shooting was reported in Norfolk, Virginia, Friday when four children were shot by a 15-year-old boy, cops said. All are expected to recover and the teen boy was arrested.
In Dallas, five men were hit by gunfire in a mass shooting, with only one person surviving Sunday. Another 61-year-old man died in another shooting in the Texas city on the Fourth of July, when he was blasted “multiple times in the street during a disturbance,” cops said.
Two were killed and three others were injured in Cincinnati, Ohio, where a gunman opened fire at a holiday party Sunday, according to police. No arrests have been made and cops are unsure what sparked the gunplay.
And in Atlanta, one kid was gunned down Saturday night during a brawl with more than 50 youths, according to Fox 5.
The Big Apple has grappled with a 40-percent spike in shootings this year — but over the last two weeks, gun violence has been slightly down, according to CompStat data released Monday.
The city did, however, see an increase this July 4 when 12 shootings were reported with 13 victims, which was up from eight and eight last year, respectively, the stats show.
Meanwhile, Chicago’s shooting numbers this holiday weekend were similar to 2020’s, when 87 people were shot — 17 fatally, according to ABC 7.
