Five people were injured in a stabbing attack at a New Zealand supermarket on Monday, authorities said.

Two workers at the Countdown supermarket in the city of Dunedin were among those wounded by a suspect, who was later taken into custody, according to police.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the stabbing does not appear to be an act of domestic terrorism, but a motive is unclear.

The victims suffered stab wounds or related injuries. They were all taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Witnesses told local media that several heroic shoppers tried to subdue the suspect, with some of them getting injured in the process.

“We are shocked and devastated by the events in our Dunedin Central Store this afternoon,” Countdown said in a statement.

“Our priority right now is our injured team members and caring for our wider team in the wake of this extremely traumatic event. We are deeply upset that customers who tried to help our team members were also injured.”

More details surrounding the stabbing attack were expected to be released by police later Monday.
