An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was shot multiple times with his own service weapon on Wednesday when a man broke into the cop’s private car stole and stole the firearm and a bulletproof vest, a report said.
The officer, who was carrying another weapon, returned fire and shot the suspect in a chaotic scene that began in the parking garage underneath his apartment building in Sherman Oaks at about 2:25 p.m., Fox 11 reported, citing police.
“From what started out as a burglary, a theft into a vehicle, and the senselessness of this escalated into this level of violence just has me extremely troubled,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore said at a press briefing.
The unidentified cop was heading to his vehicle with an unidentified woman when they spotted the male suspect rifling through his car, the report said.
The officer confronted the burglar, who was wearing the officer’s bullet-proof vest and had located his service weapon.
Police said the suspect opened fire, sparking a gun battle between the two that spilled out into the street.
The officer struck the suspect three times and retrieved his gun and vest, authorities said.
When the cop retreated back into the parking garage, he collapsed the ground, police said. He had bullet wounds in his torso and thigh.
Both men were hospitalized and listed in stable condition.
Charges against the suspect are pending.
